I've been using 1-click for some time now and I have to say, it's become indispensable for web browsing. It's especially useful on Newsvine when reading some of the heavy hitters that use words whose definitions confound the hell out of me (a not too difficult task actually ;).
In a nutshell, 1-click is a dictionary that's one click away from giving you the meaning of any word your browser is capable of displaying. It's brilliantly simple... hold down the alt key and click on the word. Out jumps a pop-up window with the dictionary definition of the offending word. Simple yet brilliant. I still have Websters loaded as a search engine, but I seldom use it anymore. Why go to the trouble of highlighting a word, copying and pasting it to a search box, and having it display a new tab or browser, when the same info is only one click away?
1-click is also available for Internet Explorer and Opera. I don't use either browser, so I can't comment on how well it works with them. Here's the link for Opera and IE.
I hope you find it as useful as I have.
Edit: Here's the link to the Firefox add-on that I forgot to put in when I wrote the article. Sorry for any confusion...
Wonderful I love add-on's for Firefox :-) I will be glad when add-ons start working for FF3 beta !
Pretty neat, especially when I alt click your name :-)

WikipediA | Mentioned InJames Lacey Dent (born May 9, 1939) is an American professional golfer.
He was born in the golf mecca of Augusta, Georgia, home of the Masters Tournament, though as an African American he wouldn't have been allowed onto the Augusta National course at the time, except as a caddie. He caddied both at Augusta National and at Augusta Country Club as a boy.
Whoa !! That worked in FireFox 3.0 Beta ! Hey that is a first....
this is my favorite extension but it seems conflicted about firefox v3b. for me, it doesnt work yet.
I have not heard a world on Firefox Beta Final, actually it seemed like not much had changed as no new updates had come out since Nov. 19th. and very little bug fix's and then a major update a few days ago. I would guess very soon.
OK Back on Firefox 2.0 now, I think I messed up. When I did a search for add-ons, looking for 1-click I found nothing, But when I typed went to "Manage Search Engines" One-Click popped up in the column and I went to Ask.com which downloaded itself. However not to Firefox, but to Windows XP SP3, so now I have the Alt-One Click (Looks like a "A") sitting down in my toolbar near my clock...Is that what you have Jim ? Or did I blow it.....
Any chance it is renamed "Answers 2.2.27" ? Maybe I just found it.
Whoa Firefox 3.0 Beta just added the YouTube viewer.. but no 1-Click :-(....Think I will stick to memory hog Firefox 2.0, I like my add-ons to much !
Thanks Jim
I love it already! (BTW, it's Ctrl-click in Linux)
Cool and very similar to the Inline Google Definitions add-on (which has some issues with Newsvine).

This is a nice extension. If you're using Safari, though, it's already built-in. Simply hold down Control+Command+D as you hover over any word. It'll bring up the Oxford dictionary definition, with a dropdown to change it to the Oxford thesaurus.
In Safari, you can also ctrl-click to "Look up in dictionary".
On a Mac, you can also use Spotlight to look up definitions (command-space and start typing the word). Or, you could place a dictionary widget in Dashboard. Not as easy as a click, but universally accessible and very handy.
Very nice tool
Thanks.
Hey This is great! I use IE7 with Norton anti-spy so it took a minute to install and actually work. But I figured it out (had to allow) Now it works great! Thanks You.
Wonderful! Thanks for pointing this one out. I am a huge fan of the Merriam-Webster site and love to know the definitions and derivations of words. This add-on makes it easy to satisfy my thirst for knowledge without interrupting whatever I'm in the process of doing.
Thanks for this, Jim. I just found the article and had to add the feature. For starters I tried it on "confound" in your explanation above (convenient). I'm familiar with this word, but was still impressed with the completeness of the definition. I'm hooked already. :)
Thanks, I just tried the IE version and it worked great. Like you I was tired of cut and pasting all the time. thanks again.
Oooo, hadn't heard of this one. I'm going to go download that now. Thanks for the heads up! And thanks for not posting it three months ago when I never would have seen it. ;)
I've been using this religiously since I downloaded it. It makes posting life so much easier. I used to keep a separate tab open with dictionary.com ready and waiting for me, this saves so much time!!
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
